Taifa Stars stun rivals in thrilling derby
The Dar es Salaam derby lived up to its billing as Young Africans SC edged Simba SC in a dramatic last-minute winner that sent the fans into raptures. The match, played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, was a tense affair from the first whistle.
Young Africans took the lead in the 23rd minute through a brilliant strike from their star forward, but Simba responded quickly with an equalizer just before halftime. The second half saw both teams create numerous chances, with the woodwork being struck twice.
Just when it seemed the match would end in a draw, Young Africans won a controversial penalty in the 89th minute. The captain stepped up and coolly slotted it home, sending the Young Africans fans into delirium.
Simba SC players surrounded the referee, protesting the decision, but the goal stood. The victory extends Young Africans' unbeaten run to 12 matches and puts them firmly in the title race.
Speaking after the match, the Young Africans coach praised his team's resilience: "We showed great character tonight. Simba are a fantastic team, but we believed in ourselves and got the reward."
Simba's coach, on the other hand, was less pleased: "I don't want to comment on the refereeing decision. We played well and deserved something from this game."
The result sends Young Africans to the top of the league table, while Simba drops to third. The title race is heating up, with both teams expected to battle it out until the end of the season.
