Tanzania's young swimmer qualifies for World Juniors

At just 16 years old, Tanzanian swimmer Aisha Mohamed has made history by becoming the first East African swimmer to qualify for the World Junior Championships. Her achievement is being celebrated across the continent.

Mohamed, who trains at the Dar es Salaam Aquatic Centre, clocked 1:58.34 in the 200m freestyle at the qualifying meet in Nairobi, beating the qualification time by over a second. The time is a new national record.

"I can't believe I actually did it," said Mohamed after the race. "I've been dreaming of this moment since I was 10 years old. I want to thank my coach, my family, and everyone who supported me."

The World Junior Championships will be held in Singapore later this year, and Mohamed will be competing against the best young swimmers from around the world. She is determined to make her country proud.

Her coach, who has been working with her for the past four years, said: "Aisha is an exceptional talent. She has the dedication and work ethic to go far in this sport. This is just the beginning for her."
